Gives children an innovative way to work through and release their disappointment through guided categorization. This visual support strategy prompts children to organize information into conceptual groupings to help them understand the reason behind the emotions they are feeling. It provides a structure to analyze the root of their disappointment, file it away, review the situation with an adult, and focus on the positive by identifying situations that worked out as they had hoped. Many children with emotional and behavioral difficulties need strategies to help them learn how to regulate their responses when faced with disappointment. Helping children regulate their emotions is an important goal. Children who can't bounce back from disappointment tend to externalize blame and can become vulnerable to rage and depression. Parents, teachers and therapists can incorporate this tool to help children in elementary and middle school deal with everyday disappointments. The File Factor has been used to help improve the coping skills of children diagnosed with high functioning autism, aspergers, PDD, NLD and ADD as well as children who are easily frustrated, depressed, anxious, shut down, externalize blame or have developed a sense of being a victim.
