Reading fluency program for third grade (Level C) provides short, high-interest nonfiction texts designed to be read quickly and meaningfully. Selections use high-frequency words and words with common phonetic patterns. Passages feature grade appropriate science and social studies topics. For each topic, five selections develop vocabulary and student background information preparing students for reading in the content areas. Book 3 topics: inventions; simple machines; sound; Ancient Egypt; communication; Native Americans. Level C books include 1000 most-frequently-used words. Phonic patterns: vowel patterns in single-syllable words; target number of words read per minute is 120. Program includes comprehension checks. A one-minute timed reading at the end of each lesson provides immediate feedback on the rate at which students read a passage. Each of the three books in a level increases the number of words in a selection, challenging students to increase their reading rate.
