Reading fluency program for first grade (Level A) provides short, high-interest nonfiction texts designed to be read quickly and meaningfully. Selections use high-frequency words and words with common phonetic patterns. Passages feature grade appropriate science and social studies topics. For each topic, five selections develop vocabulary and student background information preparing students for reading in the content areas. Book 1 topics: pets; senses; seeds; American places; Americans Who Dream (Sarah Hale, Teddy Roosevelt, Kristi Yamaguchi, The Wright Brothers, and Charles Drew). Level A books include the 300 most-frequently-used words. Phonic patterns: single-syllable words with regular short and long vowel patterns and consistent spelling patterns. Target number of words read is 80. Program includes comprehension checks. A one-minute timed reading at the end of each lesson provides immediate feedback on the rate at which students read a passage. Each of the three books in a level increases the number of words in a selection, challenging students to increase their reading rate. Contents: resource manual, audio CD readalongs with two listening/reading speeds, CD track listing sheet, and six copies of the book. Quick Reads. | |
