Volume 34, Number 4: Theory of Mind and Language Development and Disorders. Issue provides a review of research on theory of mind (ToM) in children & adults, some with communication disorders. Articles invite readers to think more deeply about what it means to imagine what is in other people's minds. The first article links ToM research to evidence regarding two separate but interaction brain networks that are associated with different forms of empathy-- an emotional system & a cognitive system. In the second article, research with three groups whose language skills may interact in unique ways with their ability to learn and express concepts demonstrating ToM is reviewed. Another article looks at the body of research on ToM and autism spectrum disorders. The article by Noel & Westby describes a single-subject design feasibility study of a narrative-based intervention aimed at enhancing ToM representation among youth offenders. Last article concludes with a summary of suggestions for basing intervention possibilities on the evidence from normal development of ToM, along with the small body of research related to interventions that may have application to this concern.
