The author describes how she used the local cemetery as the basis for a grant project that integrated multiple subject areas. The grant was math-based but integrated science, social studies, langauge arts, and service learning. During the course of the school year, the sixth graders engaged in many hands-on activities including several field trips, using tombstone rubbings, graphing (using graphing calculators) estimation activities, a presentation to the county historical commission, gathering census data, public speaking, authentic writing (reports, letters), mapping, science activities related to weathering, and securing a historical marker for the cemetery. The author shares the benefits of the project to students, teachers, and the community.
