Activities are designed to help students build mental images of fractional parts and operations on fractions. The interrelationship of fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, and proportions is the special focus of activities which involve graphing on the coordinate plane. Seven models are used to develop fraction number sense: pattern blocks, pies or clocks, unit bars, unit squares, sets of objects, egg cartons, and coordinate plane or geoboard graphs. Parts include modeling, representing, and naming non-equivalent and quivalent fractions; addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions; equivalent fractions as proportional reasoning; equivalent fractions and the coordinate plane. Emphasizes familiarity with fractions with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, tenths, and twelfths. | |
