GEMS Festival teacher's guide features ten learning stations designed to enliven student curiosity in a wide diversity of scientific fields. Students use hand lenses and microscopes to observe, record, and investigate water drop magnifiers, fingerprint ridges, dollar bills, color printing, fabrics, salts, sand, kitchen powders, insects, spiders, brine shrimp, and pond life. The "Discovery Quilt" is a summary station. Students create the Quilt by posting their findings, questions, and reactions to the learning stations. Concepts include magnification, properties, shape recognition, pattern, similarity, comparison testing, crystals, dissolving, evaporation, aquatic habitats, life cycle, plant and animal structures. | |
