Book relates the story of James Armistead Lafayette, an American slave and spy whose information helped end the American Revolutionary War. He worked as a double agent, passing on misleading information to the British which led to the defeat of Cornwallis at the battle of Yorktown. After the war, he fought the Virginia General Assembly to gain his freedom. James took the last name Lafayette in tribute to what the Marquis de Lafayette did to help him become a free man. A reproduction of the letter written by Lafayette in 1784 appears on the endpaper. AR 5.2 RC 6.3 Lexile 940 IL 2-5. | |
