The experiences of people coming to the United States from many different lands are conveyed in the words of a contemporary girl visiting Ellis Island and a girl who immigrated in about 1910, as well as by quotes from early 20th century immigrants and Ellis Island officials. Includes two fictional narratives--one from a girl fleeing the Armenian genocide (written in blue script) and the other is from a girl who imagines her ancestor's journey to America (red type face). Boxed archival quotes from European immigrants and period photographs are incorporated to relate actual events. Fiction and fact are mixed throughout. Primary sources. | |
