KM 13633KM 13633 Goldie's History 4th Grade: Industrial Revolution
Grade Lvl: I Author:
Length: 0 Copyright: 2023

Fourth grade. The Industrial Revolution marked a period of development in the latter half of the 18th century that transformed largely rural, agrarian societies in Europe and America into industrialized, urban ones. Goods that had once been crafted by hand started to be produced in mass quantities by machines in factories, thanks to the introduction of new machines and techniques in textiles, iron making and other industries. The positives and negatives of the Industrial Revolution are complex. On one hand, unsafe working conditions were widespread and pollution from coal and gas are still struggles of today. On the other, the move to cities and inventions that made clothing, communication and transportation more affordable and accessible to the masses changed the course of world history. Regardless of these questions, the Industrial Revolution had a transformative economic, social and cultural impact, and played an integral role in laying the foundations for modern society. Contents include: Teacher's manual, 4 books: Mr. Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Gibbs Davis; Turning Points in U.S. History: Industrial Revolution by Veronica B. Grade Lvl: I Author:
Length: 0 Copyright: 2023

Fourth grade. Corn has been at the center of Iowa life for much of its existence, and Iowa leads the United States in corn production. The state set a 2016 record with 2.7 billion bushels of corn raised. In addition, the yield in 2018 set an all-time high with an average of 204 bushels per acre. Iowa’s incredibly fertile fields stretch for miles of corn and soybeans, providing the United States with two of its most valuable exports. But as farmers are growing more crops and managing more acres, fewer Iowans are making a living as farmers. The number of farms in Iowa is on a steady decline while the average farm size continues to rise. Technology drives increasingly efficient precision farming. This begs the question: Has farming in Iowa shown more continuity or change? In this lesson, students will analyze sources and then write an argumentative essay for a fictitious competition sponsored by the Iowa State Fair board. Contents include: Teacher's manual, 4 books: John Deere, That’s Who! by Tracy Nelson Maurer; The Biography of Corn by L. Fifth grade. Voting is a fundamental process of democracy, but up until the Civil War, in most places, the right to vote in the United States was restricted to white males 21 years and older. Over the years, U.S. citizens’ have been denied voting rights based on race, gender, land ownership status, age, tribal membership and criminal convictions. Students will learn about the African-American suffrage movement, racist practices to keep them from the ballot box and the continued struggle over the authority of the federal government versus states rights. While African Americans were granted the right to vote nationally in 1870, many did not see that reality until 1965. In Iowa, African-American males were granted the right to vote in 1868, but not social equality. This unit will provide an opportunity for children to compare what life was like long ago to their own life today. Contents include teacher's manual, 4 books: Anybody’s Game: Kathryn Johnson, the First Girl to Play Little League Baseball by Heather Lang; The Field by Baptiste Paul; Teddy: The Remarkable Tale of a President, a Cartoonist, a Toymaker and a Bear by James Sage; and Toys and Games Then and Now by Bobbie Kalman, Mystery photos, and "Think Like..." cards.
